Study of Strain Gauge

Scientech 2304

Share On:

The Scientech 2304 Strain Gauge Trainer provides a comprehensive study of strain gauges and their applications in strain measurement. It enables the study of bridge configurations of strain gauge transducers and the signal conditioning circuits required for accurate measurement. The system uses a cantilever beam arrangement to generate strain on the sensor, similar to the working principles used in strain gauge load cells and pressure sensors.

Strain gauges are firmly mounted on the cantilever at the point where strain is to be measured. When weights are placed at the free end of the cantilever, the resulting strain changes the resistance of the strain gauge. This variation is detected using a full bridge configuration, commonly used in strain gauge-based transducers. A seven-segment LED display shows strain in microstrain units. Different weights are provided to perform linearity and sensitivity experiments. A detailed experiment manual is included with the system.

The setup uses a cantilever beam arrangement, where a strain gauge sensor is mounted at the point of maximum stress. When weights are applied at the free end, deformation occurs, causing a change in the electrical resistance of the strain gauge.

This resistance variation is measured using a Wheatstone bridge (full bridge configuration). The processed signal is displayed on a 3-digit LED display in microstrain units, enabling accurate measurement and analysis.

FAQS

1. What is a strain gauge?

A strain gauge is a device which is used to measure mechanical deformation (strain) in an object. Mechanism It is based on the principle of transforming physical strain into an electrical resistance change that is measurable and analyzable.

2. How does a strain gauge work?

A strain gauge works on the principle of change in electrical resistance. The strain gauge will change its resistance as well when the material to which it is attached stretches or compresses. This change is measured using a Wheatstone bridge circuit.

3. How to measure strain using a strain gauge?

In order to quantify strain with the aid of a strain gauge, the gauge would be bonded to the object surface. The deformation caused by the application of force varies the resistance of the gauge. Signal conditioning circuits are used to detect this change and present it in the form of strain values.

4. What does a strain gauge measure?

A strain gauge is a device that measures strain (deformation), tension or compression of a material. It assists in the determination of stress, load, pressure and force in engineering.

5. What is a strain gauge used for?

Strain measurement in structures and components is done by use of a strain gauge. It finds application in the load cells, pressure sensors, structural testing, industrial equipment and research.
